Week 1
Kikagaku Moyo - House In the Tall Grass
I will say this album was a bit more premeditated and transparently, something I had zero doubts that I wouldn’t enjoy. When the recommendation, or should I say keywords that intrigued me were “psychedelic folk rock” with an album cover in a language I couldn’t read, I knew it would be a safe bet.
The album drifts through meditative psych-rock songs that form a familiar soundscape to some of my favorites, like Earth, The Black Angels, Glass Beams, and Elder, to name a few.
Standout Tracks -
Old Snow, White Sun – Acoustic guitars drenched in cavernous reverb, which you know damn well I’m a sucker for. Textured vocal harmonies float around each other and come together to form one gentle soundscape.
Silver Owl - A 10-minute tune that starts with twangy, tele-sounding guitar leads, classic repetitive clean bass lines, maybe a sitar(?), and soft vocals overlaying each other. A little over halfway through, we hit the bridge where we get thrown into the fuzz-soaked guitars for the shortest amount of time that makes you beg for more. If you know me, this is it. Earth’s Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull meets Sleep’s Holy Mountain.
Overview -
10/10 would listen again, and at the time of typing this, have listened 4x times through.
